 Junior Post Secondary Timeline

 
Summer
  • Look for volunteer work, community service and work experience.
  • Summer school, ACT, SAT, PSAT preparation

Fall Semester
  • Maintaining your grades during your junior year is especially important! Your GPA Counts!
  • Talk with your guidance counselor often.
  • Continue to develop your hobbies and interests.
  • Remember that you have many post secondary options such as a university, community college, trade school, apprenticeship or the military.
  • See your counselor now if you are interested in attending a military academy.

August
  • Junior orientation, which includes advertising for ASVAB and PSAT,
  • Review counseling domains and an overview of services in the counseling Dept
  • ACT, SAT, PSAT preparation and the importance of those tests
  • Dispense and verify credit checks

September
  • Register and prepare for the PSAT exam, Remember that when you take the PSAT in your junior year the scores will count towards the National Merit Scholarship program. It is also an excellent way to practice for the SAT.
  • Sign up for and take the ASVAB here at GHS

October
  • Take the PSAT as a practice test for the ACT and to also qualify for National Merit Scholarship Program.

November
  • Begin searching for scholarships. Use the web and the Tiger Bulletin to locate scholarships that you want to apply for.
  • Sign up to attend college visits here at GHS

December
  • You should receive your PSAT scores and test booklet from the October test. Review them with your counselor to identify strengths and weaknesses. Use your test results to prepare for the ACT or SAT.

January
  • Begin to think about which colleges/vocational schools you would like to explore.
  • Start talking to your parents about finances.
  • To meet university requirements, you must take the ACT (American College Test) and/or the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). It is recommended that the test(s) be taken in the spring or summer of your junior year. Most colleges accept either ACT or SAT scores; check with the school you plan to attend.

  • Read the "Tiger Bulletin." A copy is given to your English teachers. If you would like your own copy, come to the Guidance Office and get a copy at the front desk or view it on the school website at http://gilbertschools.net/gilberths

February
  • Start exploring career options in the Career Center and start investigating and talking to people about their careers.
  • When registering for your senior year classes, sign up for academically challenging classes and college prep courses.
  • Sign up for SAT or ACT tests and begin preparation
  • Take the ACT or SAT test, check the Tiger Bulletin for test dates and deadlines.

March
  • Meet with your Counselor to begin preparing a list of colleges/vocational schools to explore.
  • Begin to prepare for the SAT/ACT test. Check the web for prep resources.
  • Attend presentations given by representatives from colleges and universities. Listen to the daily announcements and read the Tiger Bulletin. Sign up in the Guidance and Counseling Office.
  • Review with parents the results of junior post secondary visit and career exploration.
  • Research summer programs in which you might be interested.
  • Sign up for SAT or ACT tests and begin preparation
  • Take the ACT or SAT test, check the Tiger Bulletin for test dates and deadlines.

April
  • Junior Post Secondary Class Visit:
Use the GHS Career Center to research colleges/schools and get addresses for those schools that you are interested in. Check catalogs in the Career Center for out of state requirements and start educating yourself about financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans and work study programs. Write a resume about yourself. Sample resumes are available in the Career Center. Include all educational, community service, leadership, and work experiences
  • Write or email colleges/schools on your list and evaluate the information sent to you
  • Begin researching special spring/summer programs such as tours and orientations provided for new students at the schools that interest you.
  • Continue career exploration by looking at aptitudes and abilities
  • Athletes interested in participating in Division I and II college sports should begin the NCAA Clearing House process with the Athletic Department
  • Sign up for SAT or ACT tests and begin preparation
  • Take the ACT or SAT test, check the Tiger Bulletin for test dates and deadlines.
May
  • Take Advanced Placement exams if you are enrolled in an AP class.
  • Continue to use the Career Center to explore different careers and their educational requirements
  • Continue to search for scholarships
  • Make plans to take the placement tests for any of our community colleges.
  • Sign up for SAT or ACT tests and begin preparation
  • Take the ACT or SAT test, check the Tiger Bulletin for test dates and deadlines.

June, July
  • Take the SAT and/or ACT Achievement tests. June is the last test given during the academic year.
  • Visit as many college campuses/schools as you can to determine your likes and dislikes. Get "a feel" for what it is you want in a college/school.
  • Continue to explore your options. Be ready to apply to colleges/schools early in your senior year.
  • Continue to explore the world of work and expand your career awareness by summer work experiences or by observing and talking to people in different careers. Talk to people who work in your field of interest
  • Athletes, get cleared by the NCAA by submitting on-line at www.ncaa.org
